The amusing reasons police officers have gotten into trouble

Police officers in Cornwall are helping to lift people's moods by sharing some rather amusing details from their archives.

The team at Torpoint have been back through the 'police discipline book' from the 1800s.

They have shared some of the snippets of why and how officers got into trouble at the time.

On Facebook the team posted: "On a lighter note, I thought you might like to read some excerpts from the archives from the police discipline book. Hope you enjoy reading these snippets, stay safe everyone."

  • On 29th May 1839, PC Baker was dismissed for going into a public house whilst on duty.
  • Also on 29th May 1839, Police Sergeant Avent was dismissed for failing to report PC Baker for going into a public house whilst on duty.
  • On 7th June 1854, PC Davey was severely reprimanded for “having drank and being dirty.”
  • Between 14th-28th March 1855, PC Short was fined 30 shillings and severely reprimanded for coming to the police station drunk, disobeying the superintendent’s orders, failing to declare monetary gratuities and “not reporting having taken a straggler on board his ship.”
  • On 12th September 1855, PC Hooper was reprimanded for allowing a female he had just arrested to visit a beer shop whilst on the way to the police station.
  • On 8th January 1857, PC Pick was reprimanded for sitting and having a drink with a prisoner in custody.
