Cornish deaths to be registered by phone amid coronavirus outbreak

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 2:01pm 4th April 2020.

People in Cornwall will now have to register deaths by phone as emergency legislation is put in place following the coronavirus outbreak.

Cornwall Council says register offices will not be open except to those with existing appointments to register a death.

Until further notice, face-to-face registrations will not be made, however, people will be able to make a request to register a death through an on-line form on the Cornwall Council website or by phoning 0300 1234 181 (Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm).

Customers will then be contacted once the council has received all the necessary paperwork, which may be subject to delays within the medical profession.

All other Register Office services are suspended until further notice.

Birth registrations are suspended. Those wishing to claim child benefit can now be done prior to registration according to the local authority.

It says it is contacting marriage/civil partnership couples who have booked, to discuss their options however it says there is a backlog of over 3,000 bookings.

Also, no new bookings for marriages or Civil Partnerships will be taken on until it is able to reschedule displaced bookings.

You can email them on ceremonies@cornwall.gov.uk but customers are being warned that there will be a delay in its response.

It said it would like to thank customers for their patience at this busy time.
