Cornish gin makers create hand sanitiser in fight against Covid-19

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 11:30am 5th April 2020.

A gin distillery in Cornwall is trying to keep spirits up by using their equipment to make hand sanitiser.

Last week, Tarquin's Cornish Gin, based in North Cornwall, received its HMRC licence to officially start production on its World Health Organisation (WHO) recipe hand sanitiser.

The sanitiser has also been scented with its signature botanicals, juniper and zesty orange.

It will be provided to people in the local community such as essential and front line workers.

Tarquin’s will be supplying its first batch of the sanitiser – over 100 litres – free of charge Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation.

That will be distributed to community hospitals across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

“We’re all in this together and if we can help our local community in this struggle that’s absolutely fantastic!

"My older brother is a Doctor with the NHS, and I’m so proud to be able to help in any way we can.”

Tarquin Leadbetter, founder and master distiller

Like their small-batch Tarquin’s Gin, the batches of sanitiser batches are very small.

Tarquin’s distillery team are working around the clock to get the first batches out to local NHS community hospitals, working with their procurement team, as well as other front-line organisations in their community.

For other individuals working on the frontline Tarquin’s are looking to create small personal bottles of sanitiser – from repurposed gin bottles – that will be available in early April their online shop, to frontline workers, on an honesty policy.
