Reports of 'explosion and fire' near Redruth

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:06pm 12th April 2020.

Firefighters have been called to reports of an explosion and a fire near Redruth after a string of 999 calls.

Crews from Tolvaddon, Truro and Falmouth all got the shout to St Day just after 6pm on Easter Sunday.

A caravan was found to be fully alight and crews managed to put the blaze out with hose reel jets.

No gas cylinders were found at the scene so firefighters are still unsure what caused the 'explosion' that 999 callers reported.

"Critical Control and Devon and Cornwall Police have received multiple 999 calls reporting a fire and explosion involving gas cylinders.

"Three appliances, one each from Tolvaddon, Truro and Falmouth Community Fire Stations were mobilised along with a Hazardous Materials and Environmental Protection Advisor (HMEPA).

"The Police also dispatched their resources to the scene.

"On arrival crews found one caravan fully involved in fire. Initially 2 firefighters used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire.

"A second seat of fire was located and the crew from Falmouth were sent to extinguish this using a hose reel jet.

"Crews have now extinguished both seats of fire.

"We have confirmed no cylinders were involved in the incident, however crews have been unable to ascertain what caused the explosion reported by callers."
