Covid-19: South West has lowest community deaths

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 5:59pm 14th April 2020. (Updated at 12:33pm 15th April 2020)

New figures from the Office of National Statistics shows the South West had the lowest proportion of coronavirus deaths outside of hospitals compared to any other English region.

Unlike the daily data published by the government, that shows only deaths in hospitals, figures from the ONS include deaths in the community, such as deaths in private households, hospices and care homes.

In the week up to April 3rd, South-West England accounted for just over 10% of the total community deaths in England.

The ONS figures confirmed 406 people with coronavirus died outside hospitals in England and Wales in the week to April 3.

A total of 217 people died in care homes, 136 died in their own private households, while 33 died in hospices. A further 20 died in other locations. By contrast, there were 3,716 coronavirus deaths in hospitals in the same week.

In London, almost half (46.6%) of deaths registered in the same time period involved Covid-19, according to the ONS.

The West Midlands had the next highest proportion (22.1%), followed by North-West England (19.6%) and South-East England (17.9%). South-West England had the lowest proportion (10.2%).

Specific figures for Cornwall are expected to be confirmed later this week.
