Police stop driver on 70-mile tour of west Cornwall

Police have pulled over a local driver who was on a 70-mile tour of west Cornwall during lockdown... because they were "bored".

Officers in the Penzance area have carried out over 200 stops over the past week alone.

They have been giving guidance on the latest coronavirus restrictions and urging people not to make non-essential journeys.

Most drivers were found to be out and about for legitimate and essential reasons, such as key workers.

But police say there were a few vehicles on the roads which were 'stretching things a little to justify their trips'.

People are being urged to stay at home to help protect our NHS.

"Local driver on 70 mile tour of West Cornwall states “ I was bored so I went for a drive !” This was indeed the response to being asked if their journey was essential today. Slightly surprised the driver was asked if there was any other purpose to the journey?, we were informed “ No, I was just bored “.

"In response to reports of an increase in traffic in West Cornwall we have conducted over 200 stops on vehicles this week in order to give information and educate on the latest guidance.

"The huge majority of those drivers were out and about for completely legitimate and essential reasons. We have met some incredible people , carers travelling to work in residential homes, childcare workers, agricultural workers and teachers as well as numerous others keeping the wheels turning. But of course, sadly there were a few that were stretching things a little to justify their trips. Please please think before jumping in your vehicle. As always, help us keep you safe. We genuinely take no pleasure in meeting those who are placing the rest of us at risk.

"Thank you to those staying at home to support those who can’t. You are saving lives and it’s appreciated hugely."
