Covid-19: Couple drive 250 miles from London to Cornwall

A couple have been fined for driving 250 miles from London to Cornwall during lockdown.

The pair said they needed "fresh air" when they were stopped in Newquay on Saturday afternoon.

Police tweeted to say they handed them penalty notices and are urging drivers to only make essential journeys.

"Whilst on patrol in Newquay this afternoon penalty notices were issued to a couple who had travelled down from London for the day to get some fresh air.

"Please only travel if it’s essential."

Last week it was revealed that almost 300 fines have been handed out to people across Cornwall and Devon for breaking lockdown rules.
In the 10 days between Good Friday, April 10th, and 20th April, 296 fines were issued as a 'last resort' across the region by police.

Officers say the vast majority of those were issued to those making non-essential journeys.

A fixed penalty notice starts at £60 which is lowered to £30 if they are paid within 14 days. Second time offenders can be fined £120, doubling on each further repeat offence.

The force is thanking those people who are staying home, saying we all need to play our part in keeping the country safe.
