People mix up police in Cornwall with police in Canada

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 10:46am 29th April 2020.

It seems that people are getting confused between Cornwall in the UK and Cornwall in Canada, and keep asking the wrong police force for help.

As we all know, Cornwall is the beautiful south west tip of England, surrounded by glorious coastline and home of the Cornish pasty.

But on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean is the city of Cornwall in Ontario, Canada. Which is really quite different.

Officers from the Canadian police force have tweeted to say some Cornish people have been getting them mixed up, and they have been receiving requests for help all the way from England during the lockdown.

"We've been regularly receiving messages mistaking us for the Devon & Cornwall Police in the United Kingdom.

"Please note before messaging us that we are the Cornwall Police Service of Ontario, Canada. Please contact @DC_Police if located in the U.K."

The tweet, as you would imagine, has triggered a string of replies from people in our Cornwall.

One person wrote: "Just curious.... What's Cornwall in Ontario's stance in the jam/cream debate on scones?......

Another added: "Do I take it the train don’t stop in your Camborne on Wednesdays either?"

And another user posted: "Does that mean you're not going to deal with the cows loose in the village then?"

One of the officers from the Canadian force even waded into the debate too, saying their response times to the UK might be a little slow...

He wrote: "We are always happy to assist our colleagues @DC_Police but unfortunately our response time to calls for service there may be a little slow.

"Perhaps when the travel ban lifts we can be of more assistance."

Danny Aikman

Superintendent Adrian Leisk, from our Devon and Cornwall force replied: "And you will be made very welcome @ChiefAikman if you do visit Cornwall once the restrictions have been lifted.

"Happy to share experiences of policing our communities"
