A further 76 deaths related to coronavirus in Devon and Cornwall took place between April 18th and April 24th – half of which were in care homes.

The figures, published today, relate to all deaths that occurred between April 18 and April 24 but were registered up to May 2.

In total, 76 deaths in which COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were registered in that time period, in which 38 occurred in a care home, 31 in a hospital, and seven at someone’s home. The previous week saw 102 deaths – 12 of which were registered after April 25 when the previous figures were released.

The figures show with which local authority the death was registered, so while someone may have died in Derriford Hospital, if they lived outside of Plymouth, their death would be registered with their local authority and not Plymouth.

Of the latest deaths, 18 were registered in Cornwall, 13 in Plymouth, 11 in Torbay, seven in Teignbridge and East Devon, six in Exeter, four in Mid Devon and Torridge, three in North Devon and the South Hams, and none in West Devon and the Isles of Scilly.

For care home deaths, for which there were 38, down on 45 in the previous week, eight were registered in Torbay, six in Cornwall and Exeter, five in Teignbridge, four in Torridge, three in Plymouth and East Devon, two in North Devon, and one in Mid Devon, with none in the South Hams. Of the 58 deaths in Devon in the week, 32, more than half, happened in a care home.

Seven home deaths were registered with three in Cornwall, two in Torbay, and one in Exeter and East Devon.
