Cornwall Air Ambulance to fly over Treliske in 'clap for carers'

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 12:18pm 7th May 2020.

Cornwall Air Ambulance will be flying over Treliske Hospital on Thursday night to clap for carers.

The training flight, with a new paramedic on board, will land on the Royal Cornwall Hospital's helipad at 8pm and the team will show support for their NHS colleagues.

The team of critical care paramedics at Cornwall Air Ambulance are the only ones based in the Duchy, employed by South Western Ambulance Service Trust and as such form part of the frontline NHS response to Covid-19.

Cornwall Air Ambulance continue to attend patients, including those who are suspected coronavirus cases, bringing their enhanced critical care skills.

The Critical Care Paramedics are part of the wider NHS rota for supporting intensive care transfers around the hospital network to support the sickest ventilated patients during inter-hospital transfer.

They are also staffing a ‘Major Trauma Advice Line’ which works with the 999 call centre in Exeter. The advice line is helping to direct patients to the right clinical pathway using the enhanced clinical skills of our paramedics to support the decision-making process.

Since the pandemic began, Cornwall Air Ambulance have been flying across the South West to support other air ambulances affected and unable to fly.

In April alone the crew flew to nine missions in Devon, as many as in the whole of 2019. Naturally, this is leading to an increased pressure on tasking and the cost of these missions across county lines has now surpassed £50,000 and counting.
