Hedgehog severely injured after being 'kicked by youths' in Redruth

A little hedgehog has suffered internal bleeding after being kicked by three youths in the centre of Redruth.

The creature, who has been named Poppy, was heard crying out in pain before a passer-by managed to rescue her.

She is now being looked after at Prickles and Paws Hedgehog Rescue at Cubert, near Newquay.

Poppy was incredibly distressed and disorientated and also suffered extensive bruising and a severe hing leg injury.

The little hedgehog has been seen by a specialist vet and if she is stable enough will have surgery on Monday.

Police are investigating what happened in the early hours of Tuesday morning, at around 12.30am in the town centre.

Anyone who saw anything is being urged to contact officers.

"In the early hours of Tuesday morning, 12th of May, at approximately 12.30am in central Redruth, 3 youths were witnessed kicking a hedgehog that was crying out in pain. The witness rescued the hedgehog and took it to CVETS before it was transferred to us a few hours later.

"Poppy, pictured below, was incredibly distressed and disorientated on arrival. She has extensive bruising and we believe suffered some internal bleeding which has for the most part has resolved, although there is still some blood from the nose. She also has a severe hind leg injury and today she has been seen by a specialist at Penmellyn Vets St Columb, if she is stable enough for anaesthetic, she will have x-rays and possible surgery on Monday. In the mean time she is on anti-inflammatories, pain relief, parasite treatments and supportive fluids.

"We will do everything we can for Poppy and are liaising with Devon and Cornwall Police Wildlife Officers.

"We appreciate you will be angry to hear of Poppy's situation but please keep comments polite and focused on Poppy's recovery."
