Dad and daughter 'climbing Mount Everest' from home

Dad and daughter 'climbing Mount Everest' from home

A dad and daughter from Helston are climbing the equivalent Mount Everest for charity, from the comfort of their own home.

Terry Lander, an electrician who works at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose, is taking on the challenge with his 14-year-old daughter Sophie, using just their stairs.

Over 12 weeks, the pair have vowed to climb to the top of the world, a dizzying 8,848 metres or just over 29,000 feet.

“We worked out it was 40 flights of stairs a day.

“We started off by running up and down the stairs, to get it over with, but taking it slow is definitely the way to go. Now and then, instead of having a sit down or a cup of tea, we’ll get in a ‘cheeky six’ – that’s six flights done when we weren’t expecting it.”

36-year-old Terry lives in Helston with his wife Mary and three children.

The family are raising money for the Gurkha Welfare Trust, which came up with the original idea.

Terry is one of around 300 Ministry of Defence civil servants at Culdrose, where he works as a senior electrical supervisor. His work includes checking and repairing all the ground-based electrical systems, kit and generators used by the Royal Navy squadrons to maintain the Merlin helicopters and Hawk fast jets.

While Sophie, a pupil at Helston Community College, is currently off school during the coronavirus pandemic, Terry is still going into Culdrose to work, as well as keeping up with their mountainous fundraiser.

“I like a challenge. Climbing the real Everest would be something I would love to do but the cost would be astronomical and the quantity of people climbing means you have to queue to get to the summit.

"At least this way this allows me to do something I would love, but actually to do the climb.”

The pair are currently 1,000 metres into their climb.

Terry also recently raised £372 for the Friends of Helston Community Hospital, to help NHS workers in the Covid-19 frontline.
