A former teacher has applied for a licence to use a trike to take people on sightseeing tours in Cornwall.

Gary White has applied to Cornwall Council to get his trike approved as a licensed private hire vehicle.

He is hoping to use the Boom Mustang Family Thunderbird Trike to launch his business Cornwall Trike Tours.

In his submission Mr White states: “Cornwall Trike Tours are intending to provide a unique Cornish experience to both the local population and to our increasing number of tourists, domestic and overseas.

“The company will offer chauffered tours/experience with either set or custom routes.”

It adds: “The trike will offer a true one-off experience that will allow customers to visit parts of Cornwall that they may never have considered before and celebrate the diversity of the scenic beauty and cultural history.”

Customers would have to wear safety helmets which would be kitted out with Bluetooth communications which will allow the driver of the trike to give a commentary during the journey.

Mr White states: “The concept is similar to that of airplane/balloon flights but uses a novelty vehicle concept which, as far as the business owner is aware, is not and has never been provided in the county of Cornwall or surrounding area before.”

The document states that similar services are offered in other parts of the country including the Brecon Beacons and Yorkshire dales.

Mr White, a former teacher who says that he has lived in Cornwall on and off for more than 35 years, said he had an “epiphany” when he hired a self-drive trike during a holiday in California.

He said he wanted to replicate the experience in the UK and took a tour with an operator in Yorkshire to see how it could work.

Under his plans he wants to offer tours seven days a week from late March to October half-term.

He suggests that tours would be between two and three hours and would be based around particular areas including a Bodmin Moor World Heritage Tour and Clay Country Tour.

In his submission to the council he states that while many people see the trike as a three-wheeled motorcycle it is actually classed as a car by the DVLA.

Mr White says he imported his Boom Trike and it has been registered and approved by the DVLA.

Customers would be required to wear a safety helmet and would be advised to wear appropriate clothing. The trike would carry jackets, gloves and wet weather gear for all passengers.

Airline-style seatbelts would be added to the trike for passengers to use.

Mr White’s application is due to be considered by the council’s miscellaneous licensing committee when it meets on Friday (May 22).

It previously went before the council in March but was deferred after councillors asked for more information as the council’s licensing policies relate to standard cars and whether there was a need for new conditions to be applied to a vehicle like Mr White’s.

The vehicle doesn’t comply with the current regulations which include the need for a roof, four wheels and four doors.

A full list of conditions has been drawn up by the council’s licensing officers which could be applied to the vehicle.

The committee will meet on Friday (May 22) to decide the application.
