Labour leader to hold 'virtual public meeting' in Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:14am 21st May 2020.

The Labour Party leader is holding a virtual public meeting in Cornwall, to listen to and answer questions from residents.

Keir Starmer has launched a series of these 'Call Keir' events which are being held in every region and nation across the UK.

People in the Duchy are being invited to join the event on Thursday evening (21st May).

Members of the public will have the chance to ask questions directly to the new Labour Leader about the coronavirus crisis, the issues they would like to see raised with the government and the lessons Labour needs to learn from last year’s election defeat.

People will be asked to register to attend, but everyone is invited to join the meeting, including non-Labour Party members and voters.

Cornwall's meeting follows Call Keir events in Scotland and Wales, as well as a series of topical virtual meetings, including with key workers, small businesses and representatives of the BAME community.

“Coronavirus is a national crisis and I want to hear directly from the Cornish people about how they are coping.

“I am committed to working constructively with the Government to help the country through this crisis. I will be listening to people’s concerns and taking those concerns to Ministers.

“This event is also about having an open and frank conversation with people in Cornwall who did not feel able to support Labour in December’s election. My job is to listen and learn, and to restore people’s trust in the Labour Party as a force for change.”

Keir Starmer MP, Leader of the Labour Party

The ‘Call Keir’ event for people in Cornwall will take place at 6:15pm-7:15pm, Thursday May 21st.
