The latest ONS figures show another fall in the number of deaths in Devon and Cornwall related to coronavirus with two thirds taking place in care homes.

The figures, published today, relate to all deaths that occurred between May 9 and May 15 but were registered up to May 23.

In total, 37 deaths in which COVID-19 was mentioned on the death certificate were registered in that time period, in which 23 occurred in a care home, 10 in a hospital, and four at home.

The previous week saw 42 deaths registered, and the weekly figures show that both the number of deaths in care homes and hospitals have dropped.

The figures show in which local authority the deceased’s usual place of residence was.

For instance, if someone may have died in Derriford Hospital but lived in West Devon, while the death may have been registered in Plymouth, their death would be recorded in the mortality statistics for the ONS figures against West Devon.

Of the 37 deaths, 15 were registered in Cornwall, ten in Plymouth, four in Torbay, three in East Devon, and one in Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge and West Devon.

No deaths were registered in Torridge, Exeter (for the second successive week), or the Isles of Scilly (where there have still be no deaths).

For care home deaths, for which there were 23, down from 30 in the previous week, nine were registered in Cornwall, six in Plymouth, two in Torbay, and one in East Devon, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge and West Devon.

No hospital deaths were registered in Exeter, Mid Devon, North Devon, South Hams, Teignbridge, Torridge or West Devon.

In total, the ONS stats show 507 people in Devon and Cornwall have died with COVID-19 registered on the death certificate. 38 deaths occurred at home, with 269 in hospitals, 199 in care homes, and one in a hospice.

There have been 190 deaths registered in Cornwall, with 72 in Plymouth, 54 in Torbay, 41 in East Devon, 37 in Exeter, 30 in Teignbridge, 23 in North Devon, 18 in Torridge, 15 in Mid Devon and West Devon, 12 in the South Hams, and none in the Isles of Scilly.

Torbay, Exeter and East Devon have seen more deaths in care homes than any other setting – with twice as many care home deaths in East Devon than in hospitals

Tables below show the overall figures for deaths and the week by week breakdown. Some tables have changed from last week due to deaths having occurred but not having been registered by the publication of the dataset. An extra one death in week 18 and one for week 16 have been added to the dataset.
