Volunteer scheme helps 3,000th person in Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 2:01pm 31st May 2020.

Volunteer Cornwall has been working exclusively on supporting some of the county’s most vulnerable residents throughout the coronavirus pandemic.

The initial lockdown resulted in a surge of requests for help, peaking at over 600 people contacting the charity in the week following the announcement of the lockdown.

Most of the calls have come from people who are shielding and worried about getting food and medication and although things have now calmed down from the early rush, there is still a steady stream of calls which are covered by Volunteer Cornwall staff on a rota basis, including weekends.

“We have received requests for help from concerned relatives from all around the world; in fact, our 3,000th request we received today was for a gentleman whose daughter called us from the USA.

"Other calls have included requests for moving furniture to facilitate someone being discharged from hospital, caring for a horse whilst the owner recovered from the Corona Virus, finding foster homes for pets during a period of their owner’s illness, fixing a washing line and even collecting urine samples on behalf of a GP Practice.”

             Andy Brelsford, Volunteer Cornwall Manager

People in need are helped and supported by the 3900 volunteers who have registered individually with Volunteer Cornwall or passed to the network of 246 covid support groups who have played such a vital role in supporting their local communities.

Whilst these are the more unusual cases, many calls and emails asking for help are for shopping and collection of prescriptions.

Volunteer Cornwall is still accepting any type of referrals.  The number to call is 01872 266988 or email requestforhelp@volunteercornwall.org.uk.
