It has been revealed that nine people were rescued by off-duty lifeguards in south east Cornwall in just one day.

Beach goers got into difficulty at Tregonhawke, Freathy and Tregantle on bank holiday Monday.

Members of the public and off-duty lifeguards rushed to help.

Warnings are going out that there are bad rip currents in the area and the local lifeguard page shared a photo and message on Facebook.

"Picture showing sandbank rip setup at Whitsand bay (Tregonhawke) the rip currents have been bad here on all tides.

"Yesterday there were 9 people rescued by off duty lifeguards and members of the public at Tregonhawke, there has also been rescues at Freathy and Tregantle too.

"THERE ARE NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY ACROSS WHITSAND BAY AT THE MOMENT PLEASE TAKE EXTREME CAUTION."

A 17-year-old local girl died after getting trapped under an overturned inflatable boat on the Camel Estuary.

A man also died after being pulled from the water at Treyarnon Bay.

And in Porthtowan a surfer was found unconscious in the water and taken to hospital with serious injuries.

It has now been confirmed that lifeguard cover will return to seven beaches in Cornwall from this coming weekend.

They include Gwithian, Fistral, Mawgan Porth, Polzeath, Constantine, Perranporth and Widemouth.
