Pensioner aims to ride 205 miles on a static trainer in memory of his late son

A man in his seventies is aiming to raise money for Children's South West by cycling hundreds of miles on his static trainer.

Dominic Scotting, Community Fundraiser for Children's South West says "I work with an amazing supporter - he is called Rick Dean."

"He is a bereaved father who has supported CHSW for many years."

"He has raised a large sum of money for us over the years taking on by taking on 24 half marathons and the London marathon."

"His partner Julie also volunteers for CHSW. Rick was due to do Ride for Precious Lives (our main cycling fundraiser – 205 miles between our 3 hospices) this year as his last big fundraising event. However the event has now been moved to 2021 - Rick does not feel that he can move to ride 2021 as Julie is currently having palliative chemotherapy care and he does not know what 2021 will hold for them both."

"So Rick is planning to ride the time equivalent of ride on his static trainer at home over a weekend in June that would have been his son Kierran’s 24th birthday weekend. Rick is 71 so this is no small undertaking in its self."

Rick and Julie are both retired and do not have a huge network of friends or family to call on for fundraising.

Normally Rick would do what I would term “analogue” fundraising and so the move to online fundraising has been hard.

Rick was hoping to raise £1500 but is only at £145.
