Heavy rain could cause 'hazardous driving conditions' and flooding

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 5:57am 11th June 2020.

People in Cornwall are being urged to take extra care on the roads as the severe weather warning could cause 'hazardous driving conditions'.

The Met Office's yellow alert for rain is in force until 9am on Thursday morning but further heavy, thundery downpours are forecast across the rest of the day.

Forecasters say as much as 70mm of rain is set to fall in places, which could spark flooding with a risk to roads, homes and businesses.

The Kernow Weather Team has also shared a warning about the impact of the heavy rainfall.

"Thursday we will start the early morning with bands of heavy rain, which will continue throughout the day. Hopefully a glimpse of the sun too, but don't get your hopes up.

"The day will turn more showery and could become torrential and persistent, which again, may lead to hazardous driving conditions. So please do take extra care.

"The temperatures are a little higher than what we have seen, highs 16C and lows of 13C, although humidity is between 78-99%.

"The winds are a blustery Northeasterly around 15mph-40+mph, for a time, possibly reaching a little higher over exposed areas and coasts.

"This will continue into the evening and overnight. However we shall see drier conditions for a short while, until further rain arrives."
