Warning about children 'at risk of online grooming' in Cornwall

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 6:07am 11th June 2020.

A warning is going out about children in Cornwall at risk of being groomed online and through social media.

Together for Families has reportedly issued a safeguarding alert.

Several primary schools in the Duchy have shared it on Facebook, saying youngsters are being targeted through Snapchat, Omegle and the game Roblox.

It involves a camera taking your photos which are then shared with other online users.

Police are said to be involved.

"Together for Families have been made aware of the following safeguarding concerns:

"1. There have been incidents locally of children being groomed through Snapchat and an online platform called Omegle.

"2. There has been an incident with a hack on the game Roblox. It appears that players are invited to open a gift which is a camera. This then takes a photo and is then shared with other users. This has also involved a child potentially being groomed.

"Police are involved."

Parents are being encouraged to check with their children if they are using these games.

"There have been incidents in Cornwall of children being groomed through Snapchat and an online platform called Omegle.

"There has also been an incident with a hack on the game Roblox. Players are invited to open a ‘gift’ which turns out to be a camera which then takes a photograph.

"Police and social services are involved but please do check in with your children if they are using these games.

"As always we are here for any advice, there is also specific internet safeguarding information available on the school website."
