Staff at Newquay Zoo facing the axe

Staff at Newquay Zoo facing the axe

The jobs of staff at Newquay Zoo could be at risk after owners confirmed they would not be reopening another of their attractions over the border in Devon.

Wild Planet Trust announced on Tuesday 16th June that Living Coasts in Torquay keep its doors firmly shut as the company seeks to cut costs due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic.

Last week it was confirmed that Newquay would open again for the first time since it was forced to close due to COVID-19.

“In order to ensure the future of Paignton and Newquay Zoos, we are having to make some tough decisions.

"The survival of the zoos will depend on visitors coming to our sites when we re-open over the summer.

"But more importantly for local people to continue that support throughout the winter, when the zoos historically run at a loss.

"Cost cutting measures that the zoos are looking at include a freeze on all capital work and cutting back on all non-essential expenditure.

"Unfortunately, as wage costs account for over 50% of operating costs, making posts redundant is something we are, regrettably, having to consider.

"Yesterday, we started a collective consultation with our staff which, including those based at Living Coasts, could result in over 100 posts being made redundant."

A fundraising campaign in place for Newquay Zoo has  raised thousands of pounds.
