Dog reunited with owners after falling from Newquay cliff

A dog has been reunited with her owners after falling from cliffs on the edge of Newquay.

Coastguard rescuers and a lifeboat were called to help after Willow the Springer Spaniel took a tumble at Polly Joke.

Crews managed to bring her back to safety at around 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon.

Willow was left a bit cold and wet but was otherwise unharmed.

Newquay RNLI says it is glad the owners didn't put themselves at risk by attempting to rescue their pet themselves.

People are being urged to keep dogs on leads when walking close to cliff edges on the Cornish coast.

"The team were called to support the Newquay Coastguard team for a cliff rescue of a springer spaniel (Willow), that had fallen off of a cliff at Polly Joke.

"She was recovered by the Newquay RNLI Lifeboats In shore craft and taken to Polly Joke beach to be reunited with her owners.

"A little wet and cold, but should make a full recovery.

"The teams returned to their stations at 4.11pm."

St Agnes Coastguard Rescue Team

"Newquay RNLI lifeboat volunteers were called at 3.30pm on Thursday to assist in the recovery of a dog that had gone over the cliff at Polly Joke.

"Both of the charity’s inshore lifeboats were launched in a north westerly wind with slightly reduced visibility to assist Coastguard rescue teams from Newquay and St Agnes.

"Arriving at Polly Joke, the lifeboat crews found the dog stranded on a small ledge at the bottom of the cliff at West Pentire. One of the RNLI crew climbed onto the rocks and carried the young spaniel across to the smaller D class inshore lifeboat, before she was returned safely to her owners waiting on the beach.

"The lifeboat crew reported that the dog seemed unhurt after her ordeal, except for a few scrapes and we're pleased that the owners didn't put themselves at risk by attempting to rescue their pet.

"Please keep dogs on leads when walking close to cliff edges and in an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
