Camborne schoolgirl smashes lockdown fundraising journey

A 10-year-old schoolgirl from Camborne smashes her target as she completes her 1347km cross trainer run - the distance of Lands End to John O'Groats.

Mia Richardson has spent lockdown raising money for the care home where her mum works, Blackwood House.

She is set to run the final 10km of her incredible fundraising journey in the garden of the care home on Tuesday.

Since beginning her marathon effort, Mia has raised over £16,000 in donations and received support from across the country.

You can find Mia's fundraising page here.

Her original aim was to contribute towards the cost of a Magic Table for the care home’s residents.

Magic tables are interactive light projectors that help stimulate engagement through specialised games.

But Mia has now exceeded her target by so much that she has managed to buy not one, but two, tables – and a greenhouse for the home’s garden.

“I do a happy dance for every new donation. I run 20 kilometres a day which is hard, but I love seeing the total getting bigger and getting messages from famous people is cool.

"Mum is doing lots of hours in her job and this makes me feel like I’m helping her and the people she’s looking after.”

Mia’s parents, Bernie and Dan, have supported their daughter all the way and will be on hand to watch her cross the virtual finishing line on Tuesday afternoon.

Bernie’s work colleagues at Blackwood, residents and friends will also be cheering her on – as will Colonel Edward Bolitho, Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall, who will present Mia with a special medal in recognition of her extraordinary achievement.

Blackwood House is one of 16 homes run by Cornwall Care. The home looks after up to 47 people with dementia and residential needs and, to date, has not had any cases of Covid-19.
