Sewage spill affects north-west Cornwall beach

Sewage spill affects north-west Cornwall beach

Published by Helen Down at 6:16pm 23rd June 2020.

Porthtowan beach has been affected by a large amount of sewage around the surf club that has made it's way into the sea.

The Community Lifesaving Club covering Portreath to Holywell Bay alerted bathers about the issue.

It has forced lifeguards to operate from a gazebo on the opposite side of the beach for the time being.

All other beaches in the area should be open today with lifeguards at Portreath, Chapel Porth, Perranporth, Hollywell.

"Pollution Risk Warning: Bathing not advised today due to the likelihood of reduced water quality.

"Porthtowan is a rock, sand and pebble beach enclosed on both sides by high cliffs and rocky pools and backed by the remains of a sand dune and a small river.

"At high tide the beach becomes narrow while low tide seas vast expanses of sand flats exposed.

"A number of sewer overflows discharge at various points upstream of Porthtowan into the Porthtowan Stream that flows across the beach before meeting the sea.

"Water quality can also be impacted by diffuse pollution."

Surfers Against Sewage

This red alert follows one issued 48 hours ago for south-east Cornwall at Seaton caused by storm sewage discharged from an overflow.
