School uniform appeal for struggling families snowballs

An appeal has been launched in Cornwall to help families that are struggling to afford new school uniform and equipment.

Newquay Tretherras staff were aware that some parents were facing increased financial pressures and wanted to help.

It has set up a donation station in its car park while staff look for items left in classrooms that others can use.

It is now hoped it can spur on other schools to appeal to their local communities and do the same.

"Given the current financial hardship that many families are facing, we are acutely aware that some will face a real struggle to purchase the equipment required for their child to make a smooth transition from primary school or to continue to purchase items as their child grows out of their current Tretherras uniform.

"All staff have been asked to scour classrooms for anything lurking around. Our website and social media platforms have appealed to past and present families along with the local community to see if they can help.

"Our car park has a donation station for both new and used items ranging from blazers to trainers to be and placed in. This is not just a Newquay issue it is a county wide situation that many families and therefore schools are going to be dealing with in the coming weeks."

Laura said she is hopeful the appeal will spread to other schools and communities in Cornwall.

"It appears to be snowballing. I am delighted," she said.

"I have even had ex-staff members asking to sponsor an anonymous child for their entire uniform."
