£5.5m of funding to improve Cornwall's rural road network

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 6:43am 1st July 2020.

Over five million pounds' worth of funding is being given to Cornwall to help improve its rural road network.

£23m of government money is being allocated to six road improvement projects across the south west.

It is part of the Prime Minister's plans to invest £5billion in infrastructure to kick-start the country’s economic recovery from coronavirus.

The south west schemes will receive a total of £23,321,000 from the government, along with £3,040,000 of local funding, to proceed.

The projects are in the North Cornwall, Newton Abbot, Taunton Deane, Poole, Thornbury and Yate and Tewkesbury constituencies.

In Cornwall, the money will be used to 'restore resilience'.

"Cornwall’s extensive local rural road network is suffering from years of under investment and in parts, despite best efforts utilising Asset Management principles, is showing signs that they are reaching the end of their serviceable life."

£5million government funding is being provided to Cornwall Council, along with £500,000 local funding, bringing the total investment to £5.5million.

“As the country begins the recovery from Covid-19, we need to get on the front foot and invest in infrastructure in every region to reignite the economy, helping better connect people with work and leisure in the future.

“By investing £100million in local roads and reaffirming our commitment to better connecting communities, we are not just talking about levelling up – but making it happen.”

Transport Secretary, Grant Shapps
