Woman dies at Derriford after being taken into police custody

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 8:15am 6th July 2020.

A woman has died at Derriford Hospital after being taken into custody by Devon and Cornwall Police.

The force has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) following the death of a woman in Plymouth this weekend.

The woman from Plymouth was arrested and taken into Charles Cross Police Custody during the afternoon on Friday 3rd July.

Later that afternoon she suffered a medical episode and custody staff and the health care practitioner immediately attended and administered emergency treatment.

An ambulance attended and the woman was taken to the Derriford Hospital in a serious but stable condition; her next of kin were informed of this development.

Police have since been informed by Derriford that the woman was pronounced deceased late morning on Saturday 4th July.

A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed.

The force has informed the IOPC, as is mandatory in any case such as this, and enquiries led by Devon and Cornwall Police continue.
