Dog dies after falling from cliffs in Bude

Published by Sarah Yeoman at 6:10am 16th July 2020.

A dog has died after falling from cliffs on the north coast of Cornwall.

Coastguard crews and the RNLI were called to Bude on Wednesday morning, near to Compass Point.

The pet had fallen from the cliff top and two people had scrambled down the cliff in a rescue attempt.

They managed to get themselves back up safely but sadly the dog could not be saved.

Now Bude Coastguard Rescue Team is urging people not to attempt rescues themselves but to always call for help.

"Bude Coastguard Rescue Team were paged at 11:13 this morning to a possible cliff rescue near Compass Point, following a report received by Falmouth Coastguard Operations Centre from a member of the public of two persons who had apparently scrambled down the cliff in an attempt to rescue their dog, who had fallen from the cliff shortly before.

"Bude Lifeguards also launched their RWC craft to get "eyes on" in anticipation of the Rescue Team's arrival.

"As the team arrived on scene and began their search for the casualties, the first informant approached the team from the south, along with the members of the public who had managed to self-recover up the cliff with their dog.

"Sadly, the dog was deceased following the fall.

"Our thoughts remain with them today. We would kindly ask that any comments left below are good-natured or sympathetic.

"Please remember, in circumstances where a dog goes over the cliff edge, do not attempt to rescue or retrieve them yourself. Instead, dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard."
