Properties in a Cornish town have been evacuated after a gas leak

People have been evacuated from a number of commercial premises in the town following a gas leak.

Firefighters responded to the emergency call after a strong smell of gas on a building site was reported.

They have been working with a utility company to stop the leak.

"At 12:51 this afternoon Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service were called, to a strong smell of gas on a building site in the St Columb area.

"Firefighters worked with Wales and West Utilities to isolate the gas leak.

"A small number of commercial properties were evacuated and a 100m cordon was put in place as a precaution."
