Desperate plea to help save puppies from 'death row' in Romania

A desperate plea is going out to Cornwall to help save puppies from 'death row' in Romania.

Liz Akkos from Liskeard, and Kat Spencer from Fraddon, work with a project out in Romania that saves dogs from death and gets them rehomed.

Currently they are trying to rescue 35 dogs who face being put down at a kill shelter, including two mums with litters of puppies.

They need to be reserved by Wednesday to help rescue them, otherwise they are set to be euthanised at the end of the week.

To rescue the dogs from the kill shelter a sponsor has to pay a fee for the animal's release.

The money makes sure the dogs are transported to safety, vaccinated, deflead and de-wormed. Mums will be spayed when the time is right and for any other veterinary treatment they may need to nurse them back to health.

A Just Giving page is aiming to reach £2,000 so the dogs can be saved from the Ovidiu shelter. The campaign has almost hit its target.

Liz told Pirate FM how thousands of dogs die each year and need help so they can find loving forever homes, in places like the UK.

"It's heartbreaking, the scale of it is a very shocking thing, the situation in Romania is just abysmal.

"There are hundreds of thousands of dogs being unnecessarily euthanised there every year, and they are killed in the most brutal and terrible ways. There is just so much suffering it's off the scale.

"We've had a lot of losses recently with other litters of puppies that we've saved. Unfortunately they've succumb to diseases like parvo before we could get them fully vaccinated.

"So our real hope is to keep all these puppies alive and get them all the care possible so they can live normal, happy and healthy lives."
