A group of travellers with caravans and ponies have set up camp at the sports centre in Newquay.

Photos on social media show the group on playing fields with a number of vehicles, including caravans, cars and a horse and cart.

It is understood that the group has been on the site since the weekend.

Bosses at Newquay Sports and Community Centre say they have made contact with the group.

They have also spoken to police and Cornwall Council and an eviction process is now said to be underway.

"Responsibility for the wider management of this site rests with Cornwall Council, so we will be taking action to respond to this encampment."

"We have spoken to them and made contact with the relevant authorities."

They later added: "We have been in contact with the police and Cornwall Council who are engaging the travellers and starting eviction proceedings."

"We are aware of this and officers have visited the site following reports of the arrival of members of the travelling community.

"However this is a civil matter as private/council land [one for the landowner essentially].

"Police will deal with any reports of criminal offences, antisocial behaviour or disorder."
