The full insurance pay outs from last year's harsh winter in the South West are revealed.

Figures show the total was nearly three quarters of a million pounds.

Alan Goddard is from the Truro insurance company Cornish Mutual.

He warns people to take precautions this coming winter...

“The most expensive claims are those which involve escape of water into people’s houses and the average cost of a claim there was over £ 4,500. So, in spite of the fact that people have insurance it’s still a nasty thing to have to deal with when you’ve got water pouring down the stairs because you’ve got a burst pipe”

“In spite of the fact that insurance is in force it is misery.  It is far better to make sure you take simple precautions. The really, really bad burst pipe claims involve people being out of homes for months while properties are repaired.
