Youth Unemployment Soars in Cornwall

Youth Unemployment Soars in Cornwall

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 2:33pm 15th November 2011.

The number of youngsters without a job in Cornwall rockets.

Union stats show unemployment amongst eighteen to twenty-four year olds is up by nearly a third.

The TUC wants the government to do more to help them.

Tom from Liskeard is one of those struggling, "There aren't any jobs. No-one's taking on an eighteen year old, really don't want to do it. They think it's a bit more of a risk having an eighteen year old who doesn't have as much experience than a twenty or thirty-something."

Tom reckons he and his mates deserve a chance, "We need a little bit of help, but we're not as clueless as most people think. We are willing to work. Everyone wants to work. No-one really wants to be sat at home doing nothing. Just give us a chance really."
