Could Cornwall get its own police force?

A top Duchy official has written to the Policing Minister asking for his views on whether we could go it alone.

The Cornish Constabulary originally merged with Devon in 1967.

The council says it is looking into it because so much has changed since then.

Lance Kennedy, Cabinet Member for Community Safety and Public Protection, insists it is only an idea at the moment: "It's not beyond the realms of doing, but it would cost public money to put the team together to do that, and I'm not prepared to even look for that sort of money without some sort of guidance from the minister that they would consider some sort of proposal seriously, on its merits.

"The situation has changed drastically since nineteen sixty-seven; population is different, the economy is different, we've got the unitary council, we work closely with the police. It's a question of, let's look at it, let's do the research and see if it would be cost effective for the people of Cornwall".

Devon and Cornwall Police said it had no comment on the proposal.
