Fresh Calls for Action Over Pasty Tax
3:22pm 15th May 2012
Cornwall is urged to step up the fight against the Pasty Tax.
The council's leader is being asked to write to the Chancellor George Osborne, calling for the twenty percent hike to be scrapped.
This comes as a Duchy official quits in protest over the row.
Chris Pascoe is resigning from the Liberal Democrat party.
St Ives MP Andrew George fears the tax will cost jobs:
"There are thousands of jobs actually tied up in the pasty industry, and of course, the pasty has been a great export. You know, a real economic driver to Cornwall, and of course, what we want to do is to make sure that that is something that can expand further and help the Cornish economy.
"Cornwall is the poorest region in the UK, we can't afford to lose any jobs quite frankly. What we need to be doing, as one region that actually is still entitled to the highest level of development aid in Europe, what we need is actually help, not a further burden."
