Cornish Bosses Urged To Take On More Youngsters

There are calls for more Cornish employers to give young people a chance.

It is as Pirate FM learns 5,400 18 - 24 year olds are unemployed in the Duchy

A special advice session is being held In Looe on things like providing work experience and apprenticeships.

Organiser Armand Toms says it is a win-win solution: "You can actually take somebody on on work experience, and actually see how they fit in with your company's needs and wants. If you like that person, then you can take them on, and take them through the apprenticeship route and you'll be able to skill them up.

"Youngster todaty are better educated, you know they tick a lot boxes than we ever did. But they find it difficult to find one job. That's what must be so frustrating for them. They work, they achieve, but then there's no end product to it."

Cathie Kessell is Employer Account Manager for the National Apprenticeship Service. She said: "The National Apprenticeship Service is delighted to be working closely with Liskeard JobCentre, Sheryll Murray MP and local Councillor Armand Toms. We hope many employers will come forward and offer young unemployed persons a chance to prove what they are capable of."
