Devonport Ship Drafted In For Olympic Security
7:00am 11th August 2012
Pirate FM has been onboard the Devonport ship providing security cover for the Olympics.
HMS Bulwark has been stationed off Weymouth to protect the sailing from unauthorised boats straying into the race area.
We have learnt they had to deal with two hundred incidents on the day Falmouth's Ben Ainslie won his historic fourth gold.
Alex Burton is the ship's Captain. He said none were sinister: "It makes an interesting change from hotter climes which is where the Royal Navy is generally deployed, but we deploy globally and whether we're seven miles off the coast of Weymouth or whether we're deployed to the far, far corners of the world, we just get huge rewards by protecting the nation's interests.
"I think it was probably the second World War was the last time Weymouth Bay was closed to intruders and so, there was a first couple of days of education. After that, there were a few people who were ignorant of the rules, but it's been a very rewarding and safe operation."
