Camelford Leisure Centre Saved

Control of Camelford Leisure Centre has been handed to locals, after it was threatened with closure.

Campaigners have been fighting to save the pool since the council pulled funding because of cuts.

From December 10th, the running of the centre will be taken over by a community company called Camelford Leisure Centre Ltd.

Closing it would have meant users facing a 25 mile round trip to Bodmin.

Local mum Vicky Horner is glad it has been saved. She said: "It's easy. It's just up the road, you don't have to get in the car and drive anywhere, you can just put them in the buggy and walk up there. it's good for them to get out and about walking instead of getting in the car all the time.

"It's a focal point for people to meet. It's very important for the community to have those facilities. We are a young family in Camelford and once the kids get older it is something that we would do together and definitely use the facilities more"

Becky Coldman from the Friends of Camelford Leisure Centre said closing it would have been a huge blow: "It would mean basically that children wouldn't learn to swim. Primary schools would probably no longer provide swimming lessons, and the secondary school, because it would cost too much to take the children to a swimming pool and they'd lose too much lesson time"

The group is urging more people to join and to use the centre to help secure its future.  Becky is also worried that groups like the local surf lifesaving club will be left in the lurch.

She said: "They're our lifeguards, future lifeguards on the beaches. If they're not training here in the winter they may disband and so beaches like Tebarwith and Crackington Haven might not have lifeguards in the future because there won't be people trained to do it"
