Dangerous Driving Warning

news - car

Published by the Pirate FM News Team at 3:19pm 15th November 2012

Pirate FM can reveal nearly 500 Cornish youngsters were hurt in crashes last year.

New statistics show five 16-24 year olds died and nearly 70 received serious injuries.

This as a car from a fatal-wreck is installed outside Truro College as a reminder for students.

Lee Griffin from Cornwall’s Fire and Rescue Service said:

“The hope is that it will make these young drivers just think. They’re inexperienced drivers, they’ve got their friends in the back, the stereo’s playing out loud and it will make them think to slow down, not to drink drive and all the other things associated with the risk of driving.”

Firefighter Mark Henwood from Orange Watch Truro said:

“Our display aims to highlight the consequences of poor driving behaviour,” said “Young drivers have a higher proportion of accidents in the evenings and early mornings - with the longer nights drawing in and Christmas not too far away, we hope the display will act as a timely reminder for students.

“We would like to thank Truro and Penwith College for allowing us to use their site for the display, Cornwall Road Safety team and Persimmon Homes for the use of their fencing to put around the car.”

Jane Cashmore from Truro and Penwith College said:

“We appreciate young people enjoy the freedom to drive and we support any initiative to encourage them to do this safely.”
