Cornish Attacker Jailed

A Cornishman who barged into a disabled pensioner's home and beat him repeatedly has started a six year prison sentence.

Edward Bridgewater from Watergate Bay had denied burglary and assault last July.

On Wednesday, the 29 old told Truro Crown Court he had gone into Peter Fuery's garden in St Columb Major to say a prayer to his grandmother who used to live there, but claimed that Mr Fuery attacked him with his stick.

Judge Christopher Harvey Clark QC referred to the attacker's history of assaults involving drunken violence: " When fuelled by alcohol you lose your temper and strike out at whoever happens to be in your way.

"In my judgement this offence was of a truly despicable nature.

"You knew the bungalow was occupied by a frail, elderly man suffering from the after effects of four successive strokes."
