A Cornish mum who lost her son to meningitis days before his wedding is urging families to learn the signs.

Shane White from Lostwithiel thought he just had a virus when he was refused his honeymoon jabs.

But within hours he was rushed to Derriford, where he died the next morning.

The thirty-eight year old was two weeks away from marrying Kerran Parish when he succumbed to the deadly disease just over a year ago.

He had complained of a stomach ache and sore throat for a couple of days beforehand.

His fiancee say they had lived in their new home for just ten days and were planning a once-in-a-lifetime honeymoon.

Mum Ros from Par told Pirate FM the speed was shocking: "This disease can strike so quick - it just rips you apart.

"The pain is indescribable and it's something that you'll never come to terms with.

"If people are unsure get it checked out - don't wait. You can't wait because it could be too late.

"We're doing this for Shane to try to prevent other families suffering the heartbreak we have suffered."

She and charity Meningitis UK are handing out wallet-sized symptoms cards as well as unveiling a giant billboard at Asda in St Austell.

Steve Dayman from Meningitis UK said: "In the majority of cases you will notice a rapid deterioration in someone's condition. They can't really improve the treatment much more than what they've got now. The only way to take this further is to introduce a vaccine that will wipe it out altogether.

"The sad fact is that even in the best hands, even in the best hospital it's still not enough to save that life and that's why a vaccine is so important."

Symptoms of Meningitis...

  • Stiff neck
  • Dislike of bright light
  • Seizure, stiff/jerky movements
  • Altered mental state/confusion
  • Headache
  • Severe lethargy
  • Severe joint/muscle pain
  • Fever, vomiting or diarrhoea
