Health experts warn Pirate FM there could be a big measles epidemic in Cornwall over the summer.

Although cases here are low, with only one case confirmed so far this year, there have been much larger outbreaks up country.

Now officials are worried the disease may spread as people go on holiday.

They are urging parents to check their children have had both doses of MMR before the break.

Mum Vicky Hollister from St Teath has decided to give her toddler the jab. She said: "I think I would definitely have him vaccinated because if a professional tells you that's the best thing - then that's what you do.

"The benefits outweigh the concerns I think."

Duchy health consultant Doctor Kerry Bailey said: "Although cases of measles are low at the moment in Cornwall, they are high in other parts of the country and in Wales. At the beginning of this campaign we had 26,000 children who were not fully vaccinated in Cornwall.

"Obviously there is potential there for a big epidemic there, should it get a hold.

"Like everywhere in the country we are encouraging as many people as possible to get both vaccinations as soon as possible.

"We have been encouraging everybody to get it before the end of the school year so that before people start travelling around we can make sure as many people as possible have been immunised against measles.
