A ninety second trailer for the new series of Sherlock is going viral around the world.

Featuring stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, the video opens with a clip of criminal mastermind Moriarty.

"Something's coming," Sherlock immediately adds. "Maybe it's Moriarty. Maybe it's not. Something's coming."

The unshaven sleuth appears to be confronted almost immediately by an unknown woman demanding: "We brought you back to deal with this. What are you going to do?"

In a moment sure to please Sherlock fans, his brother Mycroft is confronted by housekeeper Mrs Hudson in Baker Street.

"Get out of my house - you reptile" she spits.

Creator Steven Moffat has already said the fourth series will be the darkest so far.

In an interview with The Telegraph he warned that its future will be decided by its two stars, who have since become Hollywood A-listers: "We do have two film stars in the programme.

"They haven't needed to do these jobs for a very long time. They're coming back because they want to.

"I don't know how long we can keep it going. I'm personally willing, but I'm hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show."

We will be able to see the fourth series at some point next year on BBC One.

In the meantime, take a look at what is in store here...
