Could a £200m Ship Be Named 'Boaty McBoatface'?

Published at 11:22am 21st March 2016. (Updated at 5:14pm 21st March 2016)

The power of the internet could mean a £200m scientific research ship is christened 'Boaty McBoatface'.

An online poll has been published on Natural Environment Research Council's website, giving the public the chance to name the almighty ship which will be used among the existing two blue water research ships.

The ship will provide the UK with "the most advanced floating research fleet in the world and will help put the UK at the forefront of ocean research for years to come."

The boat is aiming to set sail in 2019, taking a team of scientists and support to Antarctica and the Arctic to carry out research.

NERC shared on Twitter that the name to lead the poll was 'RRS Boaty McBoatface', alongside others such as 'RRS David Attenborough'.

NERC says that the involvement by the public will give the UK the opportunity to feel part of the project.

Within NERC's 'notes' it shows that they are seeking a name which is inspirational and related to the environment and polar science.

'RRS Boaty McBoatface' may not be the chosen name after all as NERC will have the final decision.

Entries for nominating the ship's name will close 16 April 2016.

Even the RNLI has waded into the debate, tweeting with the hashtag #boatymcboatface

The organisation says naming a boat is a 'big decision.'

On its website it says: "Should your name be lucky or funny? Straightforward or sentimental? Here at the RNLI, with a fleet of 349 lifeboats, that's a lot of decision making. So we're glad that the benefactors who fund our lifeboats take on the challenge of giving these craft names with the dignity they deserve. Or, failing that, a good old-fashioned pun.
