Matthew Patterson watches the YouTube clip at his desk - and can not believe the news.

Not realising he is being watched he takes off his glasses and puts puts his head in his hands.

It's safe to say, the teacher did not take the news well.

This viral clip has gained more than 54,000 retweets on Twitter and the student shared: "He is a really cool guy and an amazing teacher."

"I talked [to the students] about what Prince meant to me as an artist and a brave performer and a person unwilling to take stuff from record companies," Mr Patterson told the New York Daily News.

"It hit me like a ton of bricks.

"I've been listening to Prince since I was seven. I must've spent thousands and thousands of hours listening to Prince. I was just a huge fan."
