When Others Know More About Your Job Than You Do

Published at 10:55am 31st May 2016.

It can be frustrating when people claim to know more about your job than you do.

Hundreds of people were eager to share their stories when Reddit user ‘phoneix-fyre’ reached out and asked: “Professionals in any field of work, what is the most ridiculous thing anyone outside your profession has claimed to know more about than you?”

Comments began pouring in from people all over the world with varied occupations.

Rudeaspiral said: “I work in tax policy. One time someone tried to prove I was wrong about tax policy by citing a report I wrote.”

Another shared: “As a nurse, bringing medication to a patient and the family member who is obviously a graduate of WebMD university asks: "Did the doctor order that? Because I've read that an overdose of that medication might cause mild itching."

“Of course the correct answer is, "Yes ma'am/sir, this was ordered by the doctor after he/she carefully considered all the options."

“The answer I want to give is: "Nope, the janitor ordered this but he seemed pretty sure of himself when he did it, so we'll probably be okay."

Another individual in the medical profession took to Reddit to share their experience: “Paramedic here: I was once informed that you stop bleeding by applying... peer pressure.”

BigPoppaJay said: “I buy and sell junk for a living, everyday is a constant struggle with buyers who have been in this for years and know all the prices.

“You can't argue with market set prices on eBay but old men can argue that it sold for so much more in 1980.”

A Park Ranger also talked about his job: “As a park ranger I regularly get lectured by the public about what is allowed and not allowed in parks.

“I even used to carry a copy of the municipal code to show people and even that would not stop them from arguing. Now I just have them sign the ticket and they argue less.”

It appears those professional photographers are also misunderstood: “I do video work. There's been a good number of people who have come up to me in the middle of a shoot saying how they can do what I do since they got a DSLR for Christmas last year. That's always fun”.

Another photographer shares their experience: “My wife and I are wedding photographers. She's been told that she should have turned off the shutter noise on her camera (a DSLR) out of respect during the ceremony.

“The woman said that if it was possible to do on her iPhone, we should be able to do it with our fancy expensive cameras too.”

A dentist also took to Reddit: “I'm a dentist. There are quite a few people who think fluoride in toothpaste or tap water is going to kill you. These are usually the same people who come in chugging mountain dew and smell like cigarettes.”

User Smeghead333 said: “I'm a biologist. In many years of arguing, I have yet to meet someone who both denies evolution and also actually understands it.”

Firewall seems to cause problems for this individual: “I work in IT. For some reason, a lot of employees like to blame the company's firewall for every IT-related problem.

“The Internet is slow? It's the Firewall

“I try to send an e-mail to a wrong address? Firewall.

“I forgot my power adapter, low battery? That's because of the Firewall!

“I can't receive any calls on my phone! FIREWALL AGAIN."

Another user said: “Archaeologist here. Two words: Ancient Aliens.”

And finally: “Everything...I am a graphic designer.”
