"Outbreak" of coronavirus at Cornish care home

"A number of residents" have reportedly died at a care home in Cornwall following an "outbreak" of coronavirus.

It has not been confirmed exactly how many Covid-19 deaths have occurred at Roseland Court in Tregony.

The home closed to visitors last month and staff are being given health advice about the symptoms.

Bosses say that staff continue to closely monitor residents, looking for symptoms such as fever, cough or difficulty breathing.

If any symptoms are identified they will be referred for a clinical assessment.

Public Health England South West and Cornwall Council are now working together with local NHS colleagues to support staff and residents.

“PHE South West is working closely with the care home to provide public health advice to stop the virus spreading.

“Everyone should be following social distancing advice to prevent the spread of the virus. Stay at Home, Protect the NHS, Save Lives.

“Good hygiene is the best prevention and there are some simple steps you can take to protect you and your family by washing your hands regularly and thoroughly and if you cough, cover your mouth and nose with a tissue.”

Dr. Chitra Arumugam, Consultant in Health Protection at Public Health England South West

“After we’ve spoken to the care home initially we email out an information pack to support them with their infection prevention control with advice on what to do if they need additional support.”

“We are working with health colleagues to do everything we can to minimise the spread of the virus in Cornwall.

“It is important that we protect our elderly and vulnerable in care homes, which is why we have issued extensive advice and guidance to support them in managing suspected and confirmed cases of COVID-19.

“We all have a part to play in reducing the risk of infection and must continue to stay at home and only go outside for food, health reasons or work, but only if you cannot work from home. Good hand hygiene remains the best protection against the virus, including washing your hands more regularly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.”

In a statement the company which owns Roseland Court Care Home, HC-One, said they have a comprehensive coronavirus contingency plan in place

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with all families who have lost a loved one from coronavirus and we are doing our utmost to support them during this difficult time.

“Caring for our Residents and supporting our Colleagues is at the heart of what we do, and we are doing everything we can to make sure our Residents and Colleagues stay safe and well throughout these challenging times.

“We have a comprehensive coronavirus contingency plan in place, which was created by our Clinical Director and reflects the latest government guidance. We are working closely with our local health and care partners, and we have all the medical equipment, PPE, and supplies we need to protect Residents and Colleagues alike.

“Our Wellbeing Team is working hard to keep Residents active and engaged throughout this period, and to support their connection with their loved ones through video and telephone calls.

“We are proud of our Colleagues and how they have risen to the challenge of the coronavirus outbreak by showing huge dedication and commitment to our Residents. We are providing round-the-clock support for all our teams, and we are also grateful to Relatives for their ongoing support and understanding."
