Cystic fibrosis teenager raises money during lockdown

He has been in lockdown for seven weeks because his Cystic Fibrosis puts him in the high-risk category from COVID-19, but a teenager from Cornwall won’t let lockdown beat him.

Morgan Coxhead from Polgooth has spent the last two days pushing himself to the absolute limit doing an Ironman with a difference to fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis charities.

Kicking off at 06:00 on Monday, Morgan swam 2.6 miles front crawl in a wetsuit in his 10ft paddling pool attached to a tether, then ran 26 miles around his and a neighbour’s empty garden.

Tuesday, Morgan spent 12 hours cycling 126 miles on his mountain bike, which he has linked to a turbo stand in his bedroom.

“Honestly, it was tough. These aren’t the conditions you’d usually be doing an Ironman in and I’ve never attempted anything this challenging before. The saddle on my mountain bike is, I’ve discovered, really hard – my bum is killing me. The cycle was the toughest probably because it was last. But I’ve been laughing through the pain by watching Kitchen Nightmares. I love Gordon Ramsey, I think he is hilarious, plus he’s also done triathlons, so I respect him for that. I’ve also had amazing encouragement, particularly from one of my real hero’s who is a fellow CF Warrior, Ultra Athlete and fundraising guru, Josh Llewelyn-Jones. I’m just so happy to have completed this challenge and that my GoFundMe page is helping raise money, but I think I might have a rest tomorrow and then perhaps save up for a better bike!”

Morgan is no stranger to working hard to maintain his physically fitness, despite his significantly reduced lung capacity resulting from his Cystic Fibrosis.

Two years ago, he set his sights on becoming the first premier league footballer with Cystic Fibrosis – a dream he is working non-stop to secure.

He has done try-outs with Plymouth Argyle and Bournemouth and has attended Manchester City’s summer camp, who subsequently asked him to go back to be an ambassador.

But this week, concerned by the massive shortfall in funding charities are facing, Morgan decided to put his fitness level to the ultimate test to raise much needed funds.

He originally set himself a target to raise £100 – his donations are already nearing six times that.

Who is Morgan raising money for?

  • Fundraising for two Cystic Fibrosis charities designed to help other youngsters - CF Warriors and Just Breathe Cornwall.
  • People who would like to fund him can do so on his GoFundMe page here -

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

  • Cystic Fibrosis is disease that primarily attacks the lungs and for which there is currently no cure.
  • Those with CF are more vulnerable to COVID-19 and so there is unprecedented demand for support for those with the disease and their families
