Man runs half marathon on the Tamar Bridge

Michael Wilton was one of the many meant to be running the Plymouth half marathon on Sunday the 17th of May, however despite the run being cancelled, he was still determined to complete the distance.

Michael, from Saltash, decided instead to tackle the formidable 13.1 miles as part of the 2.6 challenge.

To make things interesting, he challenged himself to complete the distance by running it on the Tamar Bridge, which handily marks out exactly half a mile along the pedestrian walkway.

On the day the half marathon was meant to be held, with the weather sunny and not windy up on the bridge, Michael set out at 8:30am to ensure he crossed paths with as few people as possible.

Having been running for three years, with two previous half marathons under his belt, Michael completed the distance with a PB of 2 hours and 25 minutes.

During his run, he was cheered on by his wife, Jayne, and 15 year old daughter, Erin, who kept him motivated and hydrated, all whilst documenting his progress on social media. They also held up a board which detailed his donation page, so passersby could get involved and donate - which they did!

Michael is aiming to raise £1000 for the Samaritans and Jeremiah's Journey, a Plymouth based charity who support children, young people and their families, when a parent or carer is terminally ill, or when someone special to them has died.

Both of Michael's parents volunteered for the Samaritans in the 1970s, and due to the current situation, the charity is extremely busy trying to help as many people through lockdown as they can.

He is currently just over half way to his £1000 total, and if you would like to help out and donate, you can do so on his Virgin Money Giving page, here.
