Boy Marjorie smashes NHS auction target and pledges cash for more hospitals

A man from Cornwall who hoped to raise money for hospitals in Cornwall by holding a virtual live auction has absolutely smashed his target.

Boy Marjorie, aka Jason Sincock, initially set out to get £5,000 for the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro and St Michael's Hospital in Hayle.

But his online auctions have been so successful that he's added additional hospitals to distribute a whopping £35,000 to.

Cornwall Air Ambulance will now benefit from the money, along with hospitals at Derriford, Redruth, Hayle, Penzance and the Royal Cornwall Hospital in Truro.

The fundraising continues, too, with a new auction at 3pm on Sunday with 80 items up for grabs, including a stay at 6-bedroom accommodation in Newquay and a load of pasties among the lots.

"Initially we listed a few places because we thought we'd get a small amount but now we've got a lot larger amount we're going to take that further," said Jason.

"We want to raise money for as many of the local hospitals as we can.

"And we're going to buy certain items for these hospitals. I'm in touch with doctors and nursers and physios, all these types of people, to get things that help the general NHS."

Jason started his Boy Marjorie character around 10 years ago, with a couple of prank phone calls to friends.

"It escalated rom there," said Jason.

"People would be calling me trying to sell stuff and I'd lead them up the garden path, so I set up a Facebook page and it seemed to develop a good following."

Jason has previously raised £4,000 for the Sunrise Centre oncology unit in Truro.

The auction

You can find the auction page here or Boy Marjorie's Facebook page here.

Here's some instructions from Jason on how to bid:

To bid in advance, find the item you are interested in in the photo album "NHS Charity Auction Items" on the Boy Marjorie Facebook page.

Place your bid in the comments section of the photo. These bids will become the starting bid for the live auction on Saturday night. Items are updated daily so check it regularly!

To bid during the live auction, just name the amount in the comments on the live video.

The auction will run similar to any live auction you would attend. Keep in mind there is a lag time or delay, so once I "drop the hammer" to close bidding, I will have to wait about 30 seconds to make sure no bids have come in that I have not seen due to this delay.

All payments to be made to the Just Giving fund which is pinned at the top of the Boy Marjorie page. When making your donation, please make sure you name the item you have won. Once your donation has been made, you will be put into contact with the company/person your item was donated by to arrange delivery or collection.

You can donate at the JustGiving page here
